Purple & Brass

Worn: October 14, 2012

I had the largest skull in the nursery at the hospital where I was born. So it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that women's hats and headbands are usually too small for me now. I can generally only wear headbands if they have a metal core I can stretch out. Hats require a bit of stretch. After trying on many, many hats, I found this beret, which does fit very comfortably and helps subdue and contain my hair, which in its free state seeks to resemble Princess Merida's. Over the past few years, an assortment of berets and tams have become perhaps the most characteristic attribute of my winter style.

Three Leopards

Worn: October 13, 2012

For the second day of DomCon, I wore a cowl neck top with a central halter. This time the halter came with some dreadful woven plastic thing that was both uncomfortable and unaesthetic. I clipped it out immediately and replaced it with a simple gold ring suspended on a chain. The ring is a plunger back earring, easily removeable for washing.

I love leopard print, though I hardly ever buy it anymore, as I've found it difficult to coordinate pieces. But I'm very pleased in this outfit to have found a belt, skirt, and shoes with compatible prints.

Foiled by Darkness

Worn: October 12, 2012

Today was the first day of DomCon. Lynn and I stopped for pictures on the way back and were racing sunset to try to get decent images. I don't think we quite made it.

I wore handcuff earrings in recognition of the theme of the convention. I was far from the only one, though most of the others were of the ubiquitous "Freedom" stamped variety.

My top is of a curiously complex design I'm rather fond of, where a mock wrap has a center section supported by a halter. The blue cord originally tied in the back, but it was difficult to adjust to a desired length and the knot always managed to capture some of my hair. I added a lobster clasp and a two inch chain for easy adjustment. Normally I wear the chain so that the neckline is nearly as high as it will go, but knowing the manner in which many of my fellow con goers would be dressing, I let it all the way down today.

When I first washed this top, the gold loops rattled loudly in the washing machine and in the dryer, disturbing the whole house. Examining it afterward, the gold was covered with tiny dings and scratches, mainly at the joints. I decided I needed to alter the metal components to make them removable for washing, which I did by cutting a narrow section out of the bottom loop. To keep the loop in place the rest of the time, I wrap a bit of masking tape around the gap.

Not Actually Goth

Worn: October 11, 2012

My girlfriend Lynn and I both admire aspects of goth asthetic and philosophy, though only Lynn, who has no interest in style, actually claims to be goth. But I wear something along these general lines about once a month, as a gift to her, to make her stammer when she looks at me.

Choosing to take as many as possible of my outfit pictures in a cemetary has nothing to do with goth. Oakland Cemetary is one of the prettiest public parks in all of Metro Atlanta, and is conveniently located near three interstates, so I pass by it on many of my long journeys around town.

My hair is nearly waist length, but I sometimes tuck it under to simulate a bob. I should probably only try that when wearing lighter colored clothing that doesn't highlight the few hairs which escape the clips. But I'll probably end up only tucking my hair when wearing black or navy.
