Tricky Scarf

I went with a similar look this time as in my last photoshoot -- black with a bold color and five of the same items, the hose and headband argueably being statement pieces. But I reused them because I love wearing them, and that's what personal style is really about.

My scarf, made from the severed bottom of the skirt and looped three times around my neck, can be a little fussy. I set it aside for a few months because it kept looking rumpled, but I finally learned how to spread the upper layer of the scarf reasonably smoothly across my chest. But right after this photoshoot, I noticed a little wad of the other layers hanging out the bottom of upper layer. It only took a moment to tuck away, but there it is, in every picture.

I'll track it down or I'll make it myself.

My personal style favors dark and bold solid colors. These are usually difficult to find, especially in green. And so, after years of searching, I've finally ordered this dress, all the way from Singapore, at an exorbitant shipping rate. The label is in Korean, I think, though some of the components of the characters are not in any of the hangul tables I've consulted. I got lucky this time in ordering something that cannot effectively be returned; I love it to pieces. And while I might wear a small, medium, or large in various American brands, this dress is an XXL.

I bought these tights in connection with an Amy Pond costume I'd eventually like to do, her outfit from the Doctor Who episode "Vampires of Venice". I picked up another pair in the screen accurate dark brown, but am wearing the black pair here because it fits my own style better.

For years, I've appreciated vintage metal mesh necklaces in the Whiting & Davis style. Unfortunately, almost all of them are either silver or gold. I don't want to wear such a large piece in a bright metallic. I found an extremely tacky disco halter top on eBay, made out of black metal mesh. I bought it and separated off the large triangular piece I needed to make this shimmering neckerchief.

I didn't want to wear a ponytail again today, but I also didn't want to comb through and thereby frizz up my hair, so I folded the offending tangled mass under and out of sight. The resulting faux bob is a little crooked, since I was only using one mirror, but there are fewer stray hairs than there were a year ago now that I have most of the layering grown out.

Pink Glasses, Pink Jeans, Tight Curls

Years ago, my favorite Youtube vlogger, who has long since left Youtube, wore glasses identical to these. They had already been discontinued in this color even then, but she mentioned the model name once in the comments and I managed to locate a pair on eBay. They were quite a departure for me at the time, so I decided to wait on buying prescription lenses until I was sure I liked them. By the time I was sure, I was so accustomed to wearing them with my blue contacts that I decided to stick with flat lenses. So yes -- I'm nearsighted and I still wear vanity glasses.

I wanted jeans in various bright and bold colors for several years, but couldn't find them anywhere. Two years ago, stores suddenly broke out in them. I initially thought colorful jeans were an isolated incident, so I bought from the very first brand I saw, despite the awkward fit and lack of stretch. I've tried on two dozen brands since, but they all have similar fit issues, usually worse than the ones I bought. As far as I can tell, vividly colored skinny jeans are not available for women who need a curvy fit. So I haven't bought more and rarely wear these.

I'm trying something a little different with my hair today. I would like for it to be straighter and less volumous. What I've discovered recently is that most of the volume actually derives from brushing, combing, and otherwise detangling it after it is dry. If I leave it alone except when it is wet, the curls are much tighter, but the volume of my ponytail is less than a third of what it would normally be. Lynn loves the curlier look without reservation, though I have to fight to keep her from running her fingers through it and making it puff up. It is still far from the look I want. It also has the definite downside of preserving much of the shape of my ponytail even if the band is removed.

Two Toned

I had trouble using navy in my outfits for a number of years, as I always found it too dark and dull when I tried to use it as a color. I've became very fond of it over the past several months, ever since I realized I could use it as a neutral, essentially a softer form of black that is more compatible with my coloring.

In a number of earlier posts, 1, 2, 3, I used red as the highlight color in predominantly navy and white (or offwhite) outfits. I decided to omit the highlight this time, going for a more subdued look which nevertheless has its own appeal.

Though nowadays, my hair may be red highlight enough for any outfit.
